What is KinVention North?

KinVention North is a celebration of the vernal equinox, held annually in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, by and for the Otherkin. While being Otherkin is not a requirement for attendance, a willingness to accept and understand is. It is our intention as convenors that KinVention North be a safe place for those who are Otherkin to gather without fear of harassment, and anyone who seems to be deliberately acting contrary to that intention may be asked to leave.

KinVention North is an exploration of what it means to be Otherkin, and for many that exploration includes magick, reiki, and other forms of energy work. Many of the workshops traditionally held during the weekend of KinVention North focus on magickal activities; however, attendance at these workshops, or indeed any workshops, is purely voluntary.

What are the Otherkin?

Otherkin is a word used to describe the feeling of being not quite human, and the attempt to emphasize those parts of oneself which are different. Most of those who call themselves Otherkin feel themselves to be spiritually related to creatures normally thought of as mythical or legendary. Others feel themselves to be human, but not of Earth. Still others have no convenient labels for themselves or what they are, and yet still strongly believe themselves to be not fully human. Some otherkin feel a longing for somewhere they've never been, a distant home of some sort. Others feel very much at home right where they are, and are as much a part of this earth and this reality as the trees, rocks, and buildings. One of the aims of such gatherings is to help foster a sense of community so that we can explore and enjoy each other's diversity.
